One Cat Too Many!

It has to be said that we had five cats who were living in relative harmony, with the occasional minor confrontation, but number six has rather put a spanner in the works! (I once had seven cats and whilst there were a few spats, they were tolerant of one another.

Due to the difficulties I've encountered introducing/socialising Como, the black and white, semi-feral cat, my husband's comment 'One cat too many' is probably true but unhelpful! I took it upon myself to help the poor boy with his abscessed head the size of a bucket, because no-one else took any notice and because I couldn't sit by and watch.

We are presently at the point where Como will sit on my lap for fuss, (amazing, considering no-one could get near him), but given half a chance he will exercise his intimidation techniques on our other cats... sometimes quite aggressively. Those on the receiving end seem to be Sampson (Sammy) who has three legs and is a real hero, Baghera our beautiful rescued Bengal or Soxy our ginger and white former homeless street boy.

Lou Lou (Lucy) our pretty little fluffy lady, who is as light as a feather and looks as harmless as a lamb with her big doe eyes, is such a feisty little soul that Como steers clear completely!

So, despite a lot of progress with adding to a multi-cat household, we clearly still have territory issues and two squirty markers! I've usually found that this subsides once the cats each choose their own quiet place. All are neutered/spayed, have own bowls and beds, but seem to share randomly without issue.

I recall when Soxy was introduced, Dyson, our big ginger boy decided to spend most of his time outdoors. Richard even made him a proper, mini log cabin with an insulated roof so he was protected from the elements.

It took a while, but Dyson is living happily in the home these days, whilst remaining indifferent to Soxy and anyone he finds irritating. Strangely, he doesn't seem bothered by Como.

We have days which are uneventful in cat confrontations and others with trouble erupting without warning, when I have to leap from my desk on a rescue mission!

It seems that we take several steps forward and then a step back.

Well..tomorrow's a new day and may bring progress!

Miaow for now

Gabriella
